Building a Small, Beloved Library
Stories worth keeping close through every season.
2 min read

A child’s first library doesn’t need to be large. A dozen well-chosen books, read again and again, can mean more than a hundred that are barely opened. The point is not quantity but love: the books a child asks for every night, the pages worn soft from turning.
Start before they understand
Reading to a newborn might feel strange, but babies love the rhythm and closeness of a voice reading aloud. Simple board books with bold images and real-world objects suit the first year. Touch-and-feel pages add a sensory element; our article on Baby’s First Sensory Year explains why that matters.
What to look for
- Beautiful, thoughtful illustration rather than licensed characters.
- Stories about nature, family, kindness and everyday life.
- Rhythm and repetition, which babies and toddlers adore.
- Sturdy formats for little hands.
- Books in both Maltese and English, if your family speaks both.
A book read a hundred times becomes a part of who a child is.
Display, don’t store
Children choose books by their covers. A front-facing shelf or a basket beside the nursery chair invites them to pick for themselves. Rotate a few titles at a time, just as you would toys. Our natural nursery guide shows how a reading corner fits into baby’s first room.
Connect books to the world
After a walk to the sea or a garden, read a story about boats, birds or trees. Children love recognising in books what they have seen in life. Try it after one of our Malta stroller walks.
The gift of a first book
A book with a handwritten inscription is one of the most cherished gifts a child can receive. For christenings and first birthdays, see our ideas in Christening & Baby Shower Gifts in Malta. Our own Stories from the Wood collection was chosen with this in mind.
Begin with a few beloved stories, a cosy corner and a few minutes each day. That is how a lifelong reader is made.
