Baby's first Christmas: heirloom gifts, simple traditions and how to keep the season calm.

A baby's first Christmas is something special. In Malta, the season is full of family: the crib in every home, carols in the village square, long lunches with nanna and nannu, and children dressed up for midnight Mass. It is also a time when well-meaning relatives arrive with gifts, often more than a small baby could ever use.

If you are a parent, godparent or grandparent looking for a first Christmas gift that will actually be cherished, this guide is for you.

Remember what a baby really notices

A baby at their first Christmas will be more interested in the wrapping paper, the lights and the faces around them than in any toy. That is wonderful, and it means you can relax. The gift is really for the years ahead, and for the family's memories. Choose something lasting rather than something exciting.

1. A wooden ornament to start a tradition

One of my favourite ideas is a simple wooden ornament, dated and perhaps engraved with the baby's name, to hang every year. Add one each Christmas and by the time they leave home, they will have their own little collection to take with them.

2. An heirloom toy

A beautiful wooden toy that will grow with the child: a rainbow stacker such as the Little Landscape Rainbow, a set of carved animals like our Forest Friends Set, or a treasure basket for sensory play. These look beautiful under the tree and will be played with for years. See the best wooden toys for one year olds if baby is close to their first birthday.

3. A book with an inscription

A Christmas book, or any beautiful picture book, with a note written inside the cover is a gift that lasts. Some families choose one new book every Christmas Eve. Read our guides to building a small, beloved library and creating a front-facing book nook.

4. A Nativity set for little hands

In Malta, the crib, il-presepju, is at the heart of Christmas. A simple wooden Nativity set, sturdy enough for little hands, lets children take part instead of being told not to touch. It becomes part of the family tradition, brought out every December.

5. Something for sensory play

For babies between six and twelve months, a treasure basket filled with natural objects makes a lovely gift: pine cones, a wooden spoon, a soft wool ball, a small brush. Our Gathering Basket is a good start, and our treasure basket guide shows how to fill it with Christmas textures.

6. A keepsake box

A simple wooden box to hold first Christmas cards, a photograph, a tiny pair of socks, a lock of hair. Years later, it becomes one of the most treasured things a child owns.

Avoiding the Christmas pile-up

Babies can easily receive twenty or thirty gifts over Christmas. It helps to gently guide relatives early. A short wish list, shared in November, saves everyone stress. Consider asking for one gift per person, or for contributions towards something bigger. After Christmas, put most of the gifts away and bring them out slowly through the year using a toy rotation system.

The best first Christmas gift is a tradition your child will one day pass on.

Wrapping it simply

Kraft paper, red cotton ribbon, a sprig of rosemary or a dried orange slice look beautiful and are easy to recycle. Babies love the crinkle of paper, so leave some for them to play with. See gifts with more meaning for more wrapping ideas.

For godparents

Christmas is often a big occasion for godparents. If you are a parrin or parrina, consider starting your own tradition: the same kind of gift each year, a book, an ornament or one new wooden animal. Our Maltese godparent gift guide has more ideas.

Enjoying the season

Christmas in Malta can also bring cold, wet days. For toddlers, our ideas for screen-free rainy days will help fill the long afternoons between visits. And remember, babies are often overwhelmed by noise and crowds; a quiet room and a familiar toy can be the best gift of all.

Choosing your first Christmas gift

Questions families often ask

Is a baby too young for presents at their first Christmas? Babies will not remember the day, but the gift will be part of their story, and photographs of that first Christmas morning are treasured. What is the best age-appropriate gift? For babies under six months, a rattle or a soft book; for six to twelve months, a treasure basket or a stacker; for babies near their first birthday, a rainbow or a push toy. How do we handle lots of gifts from relatives? Open a few on the day and save the rest to bring out slowly through January, when the house feels quiet again.
