When the storms roll in, here are calm, screen-free ways to fill long indoor afternoons with a busy toddler.

Small hands building a bridge from wooden blocks over carved animals

We are lucky in Malta. Most of the year, the sun shines and the sea is close. But when winter storms arrive, they arrive properly: heavy rain, flooded roads, wind rattling the shutters. And when you have an energetic toddler, a few days indoors can feel very long.

It is tempting to reach for a screen, and sometimes that is exactly what everyone needs. But here are some calm, screen-free ideas that have rescued many rainy afternoons in our home.

Start with movement

Toddlers need to move, even on rainy days. Burn off energy first and the calmer activities will go much more smoothly.

  • Cushion obstacle course across the living room
  • Dancing to music, freezing when it stops
  • Animal walks: hop like a rabbit, stomp like a bear
  • Balancing along a line of tape on the tiles
  • Rolling a ball down a hallway for a home bowling game

1. Build a den

Blankets over chairs, cushions on the floor, a torch and a few books. A den makes the whole afternoon feel like an adventure. Take snacks inside, read stories, play shadow puppets. Our guide to creating a front-facing book nook has book ideas.

2. Set up a small world

A tray, a few wooden animals and some natural materials can absorb a toddler for a long time. Try a rainy forest with pine cones and a blue cloth river. See our guide to small-world play for two and three year olds, and our Forest Friends Set is perfect here.

3. Build something big

Bring out all the blocks and the rainbow and build a city, a tower as tall as your toddler, or a road for cars. Open-ended building is ideal for long indoor days. Read more in open-ended toys for busy toddlers.

4. Make art

Rainy days are perfect for art. Roll out a long strip of paper on the kitchen floor and let your toddler draw. Try paint in a bag for zero mess. Our toddler art habit guide is full of low-mess ideas, and the Little Maker Art Roll keeps everything ready.

5. Water play in the kitchen or bath

Toddlers love water. Fill a washing-up bowl with a little warm water, a few cups, spoons and a sponge, and put a towel underneath. Or run a bath in the afternoon and add cups and a funnel. Always supervise water play.

6. Watch the rain

Sometimes the best activity is the weather itself. Sit by the window and watch the drops race. Listen to the thunder. Name the sounds. If it is safe, pop on wellies and a raincoat and jump in a puddle in the courtyard. Toddlers love it, and they nap beautifully afterwards.

7. Bake together

Simple baking, like mixing a banana bread or rolling dough, gives toddlers real tasks: pouring, stirring, squishing. The house smells wonderful and everyone has something to eat.

8. A sensory bin

Fill a large tray with dried lentils, oats or rice, add scoops, cups and a few small toys to find. It is calming and absorbing. Supervise closely and choose materials suited to your child's age.

9. Help with real jobs

Toddlers love to help: matching socks, wiping the table, watering indoor plants. These tasks build confidence and fill time meaningfully. See raising a Montessori baby in a Maltese flat for more.

A rainy day does not need a plan. It needs a few good ideas and permission to slow down.

A rainy day basket

Keep a special basket of toys and activities that only comes out on rainy days. Because it is rare, it feels exciting. Include a puzzle, a new book, art materials and a small-world set. This is a lovely extension of toy rotation.

Quiet time

After a busy morning, a quiet hour helps everyone. Cuddle up with books, play gentle music, or let your toddler play alone with a few calm toys while you have a cup of tea. Independent play is a skill that grows with practice.

When the sun returns

Malta's rain rarely lasts long. When the clouds clear, everything smells fresh and the streets shine. A walk to collect fallen leaves or look at puddles is the perfect end to a rainy spell. See our stroller walk guide and plastic-free seaside play for outdoor ideas.

Preparing for winter

Questions parents often ask

Is a little screen time on rainy days a problem? Not at all. Every family finds its own balance, and these ideas are simply there for when you want an alternative. What if my toddler gets bored quickly? Offer one activity at a time, and let them return to something earlier rather than constantly adding more. How can I stay sane on day three of rain? Lower your expectations, plan one outing even if it is just a short walk with an umbrella, and remember that a slow, quiet day is not a wasted one. Children often play most deeply when there is nothing special planned.
