Summer Outdoor Play in Malta: Water, Shade and Early Mornings
Maltese summers are long and hot. With a little planning, outdoor play can still be a daily joy for little ones.

Summer in Malta is long, bright and hot. From June to September, temperatures can be high and the sun strong, and the middle of the day can feel too intense for outdoor play with small children. Yet summer is also when Malta is at its most outdoor: beaches, evening walks, festas and long, light evenings.
This guide offers practical ideas for outdoor play with babies and toddlers during the hottest months. Always follow current health advice on sun safety and heat for babies and young children, and speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you have concerns.
Plan around the heat
Many families in Malta shape their summer days around the sun. Outdoor play happens early in the morning, before the heat builds, and again in the late afternoon or evening. The hottest hours are spent indoors in the shade or with fans or air conditioning. Our article on quiet time for hot summer afternoons has ideas for those indoor hours.
Early morning outings
Early mornings in a Maltese summer can be beautiful: cooler air, quieter streets, soft light. A walk along the promenade, a visit to a park or an early swim before the beach gets busy can be the best part of the day. Our guides to nature play in Malta's parks and the Malta stroller walk suggest places to go.
Seek shade
Look for parks and playgrounds with good tree cover or shade sails. Bring a light umbrella or a pop-up shade for the beach. For babies, keep them in the shade as much as possible and follow advice on sun protection for their age.
Water play at home
Water play is the perfect summer activity. On a balcony, roof or courtyard, a shallow basin of water with cups, jugs, sponges and a sieve can keep toddlers busy for ages. Add a few natural rubber bath toys or wooden boats. Always supervise water play closely, however shallow the water.
Painting with water is another favourite. Give your toddler a bucket of water and a brush, and let them paint walls, steps and paving. The pictures disappear in the sun, which toddlers find fascinating. Our article on balcony and courtyard play has more ideas.
At the beach
Maltese beaches are wonderful for little ones, especially early in the morning and in the late afternoon. A bucket, a spade, a few cups and a sieve are all you need. Natural treasures like shells and smooth stones invite sorting and building. Our guide to plastic-free seaside play explains more.
Keep cool
- Dress little ones in light, loose cotton or linen
- Use a wide-brimmed hat
- Offer water often
- Plan rests in the shade
- Cool down with water play
- Avoid the hottest part of the day

Evening play
As the sun sets, many Maltese families head out for a walk, an ice cream or a visit to the square. Playgrounds come alive in the evening. Toddlers can run, climb and explore while the air is cooler. Summer evenings are also festa season, with music, lights and fireworks. Our guide to Maltese festa season with little ones has tips for managing the noise.
Gross motor play
Outdoor time is perfect for running, climbing, jumping and balancing. If it is too hot to go out, our article on indoor gross motor play in small spaces has ideas for burning off energy indoors.
Nature in summer
Malta's countryside turns gold and dry in summer, but there is still plenty to notice: lizards on walls, cicadas singing, prickly pears ripening, swallows swooping. Take a magnifying glass on an early walk and look closely. Our article on spring nature walks has ideas that work in other seasons too.
Simple outdoor kit
- A sun hat and light layers
- Water bottle
- A small bucket and cups
- A cloth bag for treasures
- A light blanket for shade
- Natural rubber or wooden toys that cope with water and sand
Travel in summer
Summer is a popular time for trips to Gozo or abroad. Our guides to travelling between Malta and Gozo with a toddler and flying from Malta with a baby or toddler have packing ideas.
Shade at home
If you have a balcony, roof or courtyard, a little shade can turn it into a summer play space. A sun sail, a large umbrella or a simple fabric canopy creates a cool spot for morning or evening play. Add a basin of water, a few cups and some cushions, and you have a small outdoor room. Keep play areas away from balcony edges and make sure railings are secure.
