From a mum who has received them: the baby shower gifts that are genuinely used and loved, and a few to skip.

Gifts wrapped in kraft paper and fabric with lavender and a wooden bunny

Baby showers have become a lovely part of life in Malta. Friends gather, there is cake and laughter, and the mum-to-be opens a pile of gifts. But if you have ever been that mum, you know a secret: many of those gifts end up unused. Tiny outfits that never fit the season, a third identical blanket, a toy that sings at 3am.

This guide is written from experience. These are the baby shower gifts I, and the mums I know, actually used and loved.

Think beyond newborn clothes

Newborn clothes are the most common baby shower gift, and the least needed. Babies outgrow them within weeks, and in Malta's heat, many will barely wear layers at all for months. If you love buying clothes, choose larger sizes, 6 to 12 months, in breathable cotton or linen. Our guide to keeping baby cool in a Maltese summer explains why natural fibres matter here.

1. A first toy that will last

A beautiful wooden rattle, a natural rubber teether or a soft cotton comforter makes a gift that will actually be used in the first months. See plastic-free teethers and rattles for what to look for.

2. A starter library

Two or three sturdy board books, chosen with care, are a wonderful baby shower gift. Write a note inside the cover. Read about building a small, beloved library for ideas.

3. Something for later

Most baby shower gifts are for the first weeks. A thoughtful gift for six months or a year is often the one that is most appreciated. A Gathering Basket for treasure basket play or a Little Landscape Rainbow for the first birthday will be loved when the newborn gifts have long been outgrown.

4. Something for mum

New mums are often forgotten in the excitement. A beautiful water bottle for feeding, a soft robe, a gift voucher for a local café or a meal delivery, a nursing pillow. Or simply the promise of a home-cooked meal in the first week, written on a card. This is often the gift that makes her cry.

5. A group gift

If the shower is organised by a group of friends or colleagues, pooling together can buy something meaningful: a quality piece of nursery furniture, a carrier, or a curated set of heirloom toys. Our gifts page has ready-made edits that work well as group presents.

  • A first wooden rattle or natural teether
  • Two or three board books with a note inside
  • A treasure basket or rainbow for later months
  • A gift for mum herself
  • A pooled group gift
  • A meal or practical help in the first weeks

What to avoid

Unless the mum has asked for them, skip large plastic toys, electronic gadgets, scented products for baby's skin and anything that needs a lot of space. Many Maltese families live in apartments where storage is precious, a challenge we explore in our toy rotation guide.

Check the registry

Many parents now make a registry or wish list. If they have one, use it. If they do not, a gentle question is better than a guess. Our minimalist baby registry is a lovely resource to share with a mum-to-be who feels overwhelmed.

The best baby shower gift is the one she reaches for at 4am and is grateful for.

Wrapping it beautifully

Baby showers are photographed, so presentation counts. Kraft paper, cotton ribbon and a sprig of dried flowers look lovely and are easy to recycle. Fabric wrapping, in the Japanese furoshiki style, doubles as a muslin or blanket later. Write a real card: tell her something you admire about her, or a piece of advice you were given.

Baby shower or christening?

In Malta, many families have both. If you are invited to both, it is perfectly fine to give something smaller at the shower and a keepsake at the christening. Our guides to christening and baby shower gifts and the Maltese godparent gift guide can help you plan both.

A gentle reminder

Questions guests often ask

How much should I spend on a baby shower gift? Whatever feels comfortable. A small, well-chosen rattle or two board books with a warm note can mean more than a large box of things she will never use. Should I buy for a boy or a girl? Natural materials and soft, earthy colours suit every baby and avoid the guesswork. What if I do not know the mum well? Choose something practical for later months, like a treasure basket, and include a gift receipt. And if you are unsure, a small, beautiful gift for mum herself is always welcome.

Whatever you choose, the most important gift for a new mum is support. A message after the birth, an offer to walk with her and the pram along the promenade, a casserole left at the door. Pair one beautiful thing with a promise of help, and you will have given the perfect baby shower present. Find more ideas in the Little Curio shop.
