Christmas in Malta is a season of cribs, carols, family lunches and, for children, the excitement of stockings on Christmas morning. For babies and toddlers, a stocking can be the highlight, often more exciting than the big gifts under the tree.

But stockings can quickly fill with small plastic toys that are forgotten by Boxing Day. This guide offers ideas for small, meaningful stocking fillers that delight little ones and last well beyond the holidays.

Keep it small

Babies and toddlers do not need a full stocking. Three or four small things, unwrapped one at a time, is often perfect. Too many and they become overwhelmed. The pleasure is in the opening as much as the contents.

For babies under one

  • A wooden rattle or grasping ring
  • A natural rubber teether
  • A soft, crinkly fabric book
  • A small knitted ball
  • A cotton bib with a festive touch
  • A board book with high-contrast pictures

Make sure everything is safe to mouth, free of small parts and too large to swallow. Our guide to first Christmas gifts for baby has more ideas for that very first Christmas.

For toddlers aged one to three

  • A small wooden animal, vehicle or person
  • A wooden spinning top
  • Stacking cups
  • A chunky wooden puzzle
  • Beeswax crayons and a small notebook
  • A shaker egg or small wooden instrument
  • A board book or small picture book
  • Bath toys made from natural rubber
  • A small fabric pouch with a few treasures

Small wooden animals are wonderful because they can join a growing collection. Each Christmas or birthday, add a new one, and over the years a whole farm or forest appears. They are perfect for small world play.

A Christmas book

Many families give a new Christmas book each year, sometimes on Christmas Eve to read together before bed. Over time, these become a treasured seasonal collection, brought out each December. Our article on building a small, beloved library explains why fewer, better books work so well.

Something to eat

A clementine or orange in the toe of the stocking is a tradition in many countries. For toddlers, a small homemade treat or a festive biscuit is lovely. Keep it age appropriate and avoid choking hazards like whole nuts or hard sweets.

Something to do together

Some of the best stocking fillers are activities: a small packet of seeds to plant in the new year, a tin of homemade play dough, a cookie cutter to bake with, or a voucher for a trip to the beach or a nature walk together.

The stocking itself

A beautiful fabric stocking, perhaps with the child's name stitched on, becomes part of the tradition. Many families use the same stocking year after year, and it becomes a keepsake.

Wrapping

Toddlers love unwrapping. Kraft paper, tissue paper or fabric wraps tied with string are easy for small hands and look beautiful. Avoid tape-heavy wrapping that frustrates little fingers.

For aunts, uncles and godparents

Stocking fillers make lovely small gifts for relatives who want to give something without overwhelming the family. Our auntie and uncle gift guide and Maltese godparent gift guide have more ideas.

After Christmas

Once the holiday is over, small toys can easily scatter. A small basket for the new arrivals and a quick toy rotation help keep things calm. Our guide to asking family for wooden toys can help ahead of next year.

Building traditions

Stockings are a lovely place to start family traditions. Some families always include a new ornament for the tree, chosen for each child, which becomes a collection they take with them when they grow up. Others add a handwritten note from the parents, recording something special about the year. A small wooden animal each Christmas grows into a treasured set over time.

In Malta, many families also visit cribs, attend Christmas Eve mass or gather for a large family lunch on Christmas Day. A small, quiet stocking in the morning, opened slowly with a baby on your lap, can be a calm moment before the busy day ahead.

How much to spend

There is no need to spend a lot. A stocking of three well-chosen items, perhaps one toy, one book and one small treat, is plenty for a baby or toddler. Setting a family budget in advance, and sharing it with grandparents who like to contribute, helps keep things simple and avoids a mountain of presents.

Finally, keep the morning slow. Little ones often want to play with the first thing they unwrap for a long time before moving on. Let them. There is no rush to finish the stocking, and the joy on a toddler's face as they turn a small wooden reindeer over in their hands is worth more than any pile of presents.
