Something magical happens between one and two. The baby who stacked and knocked down becomes a toddler who feeds a teddy, drives a block like a car and tells you, with great seriousness, that the rug is the sea. Two is when imagination truly arrives, and it is the perfect time for toys that feed it.

If you are choosing a second birthday present, as a parent, godparent or grandparent, these are the ideas I would recommend.

What two year olds love

Two year olds are busy, physical and fiercely independent. They want to do it themselves. They love to copy what adults do, sort things into groups, build and knock down, and begin to tell simple stories. Their language is exploding. Their fine motor skills are developing fast. The best toys give them the chance to practise all of this, without doing the work for them. Our article on the quiet power of open-ended play explains why this matters.

1. Carved wooden animals

A set of beautifully carved animals is one of the best gifts for a two year old. At first they will name them and make their sounds. Soon the animals will be walking, eating, sleeping and having adventures. Our Forest Friends Set is a favourite. Read more in our guide to small-world play.

2. First art materials

Two is a lovely age to begin drawing and painting. Chunky beeswax crayons, a roll of paper and a simple easel or art roll are enough. Our Little Maker Art Roll keeps everything together and portable. See starting a toddler art habit for tips on keeping it low-mess.

3. Building blocks

A good set of plain wooden blocks will be used for years. At two, children stack towers and line them up. By four and five, they build cities. Choose solid hardwood in a few standard shapes.

4. A rainbow, if they do not have one

If your toddler did not receive a rainbow stacker for their first birthday, two is a perfect time. Now it becomes a tunnel, a bridge, a cradle. Our Little Landscape Rainbow works beautifully alongside animals and blocks. See open-ended toys for busy toddlers for ideas.

5. Real tools for real tasks

Two year olds love to help. A small broom, a watering can for the balcony plants, a child-sized apron and a real wooden spoon for baking are wonderful gifts. They build confidence and independence, ideas at the heart of the Montessori approach. See raising a Montessori baby in a Maltese flat.

6. Books they can tell back to you

At two, children love books with repetition, rhythm and simple stories they can join in with. Choose a couple of beautiful picture books and write a note inside. Our guide to creating a front-facing book nook shows how to display them.

7. A gathering basket for walks

Toddlers are natural collectors. A small basket for gathering shells, stones and leaves on walks turns every outing into an adventure. Our Gathering Basket is perfect, and our guide to plastic-free seaside play has ideas for using it.

  • Carved wooden animals
  • Beeswax crayons and an art roll
  • Plain hardwood blocks
  • A rainbow stacker
  • Child-sized real tools
  • Picture books with rhythm
  • A gathering basket for outdoor treasures

What to skip at two

Avoid toys with very small parts, which are still a choking risk, and anything with too many pieces at once. Electronic toys that do the talking tend to reduce the language practice two year olds need. Big plastic ride-ons, while exciting, take a lot of space in a Maltese apartment.

At two, the best toys are the ones that become something different every day.

Gifts that build on the first birthday

If you gave a first birthday gift, think about building on it. A rainbow from last year pairs perfectly with animals this year. Blocks pair with a small set of trees. This is a lovely way for godparents and grandparents to create a collection over time. See the Maltese godparent gift guide and our earlier first birthday guide.

Keeping it calm

Questions parents often ask

How many toys does a two year old need? Far fewer than most of us imagine. A handful of open-ended pieces, a few books and some art materials will cover months of play. Are wooden animals safe at two? Choose sturdy, well-finished pieces that are not small enough to swallow, and keep supervising if your toddler still mouths things. What if they already have a lot? Consider an experience instead, or a single beautiful piece that extends what they already love, such as animals to live inside last year's rainbow. A gift that connects to existing toys is often played with the most.

A second birthday often brings a flood of gifts. Consider putting some away and bringing them out over the coming months; our toy rotation guide shows how. Your toddler will play more deeply with fewer things. Browse our gifts page or the full collection for pieces made to grow with them.
