Six months is such a lovely age. Your baby is becoming more alert, more sociable and more determined to get their hands, and mouth, on everything. Many are starting to sit with support, rolling in both directions, and beginning to teethe. It is also the age when well-meaning relatives start arriving with toys that flash, beep and sing. If you would rather keep things calmer, this guide is for you.

These are the toys I would choose for a six month old: simple, natural and full of sensory interest, without a single battery.

What a six month old is learning

At this stage babies are learning to coordinate their hands and eyes, to pass objects from one hand to the other and to explore everything through their mouths. They are beginning to understand that things exist even when out of sight. They are fascinated by faces, textures, sounds and cause and effect: if I shake this, it makes a noise. Our article on baby's first sensory year explores this whole period.

1. A wooden rattle

A simple rattle made of smooth hardwood, sized for a small hand, is perfect for this age. It is light enough to lift, makes a soft sound and is safe to chew. Our guide to plastic-free teethers and rattles explains what to look for.

2. A teether in natural materials

With first teeth often appearing around now, a teether becomes essential. Natural rubber, untreated hardwood and organic cotton are all good options. For more ideas on soothing sore gums, see natural teething relief for babies.

3. A small treasure basket

Once your baby can sit with support, a shallow basket with five or six natural objects is a source of endless discovery: a wooden spoon, a soft brush, a metal tea strainer, a piece of linen, a smooth wooden ring. Supervise closely and choose items that are too large to swallow. Our Gathering Basket is a beautiful starting point, and our complete treasure basket guide shows how to fill it.

4. A ball to reach for

A soft wool, cotton or rubber ball, placed just out of reach during tummy time, encourages rolling, reaching and eventually crawling. Balls with gentle texture or a small bell inside add sensory interest.

5. Stacking cups or bowls

At six months your baby will not stack yet, but they will bang, mouth, hold two at once and drop them over and over. Simple stacking cups, or even a few small metal bowls from your kitchen, are ideal.

6. A mirror

A shatterproof mirror placed at floor level beside your baby is fascinating. They will smile, reach and study their own expressions for surprisingly long periods.

7. Board books with real pictures

Even at six months, sharing a book is one of the best things you can do together. Choose sturdy board books with photographs of faces, animals or everyday objects. Little ones will chew them, and that is part of the fun. Begin your collection with tips from building a small, beloved library.

  • Wooden rattle

Why skip the flashing lights?

Electronic toys are not harmful in themselves, but they tend to do the work for the baby. A toy that sings when touched teaches one simple lesson and then becomes background noise. Simple, natural objects invite the baby to experiment: this one is cold, this one is soft, this one makes a sound when I bang it. That active exploration is where learning happens. We compare these properly in wooden vs plastic toys.

At six months, the most exciting toy is often the one you already have in the kitchen drawer.

Setting up a calm play space

You do not need much. A soft rug or mat on the floor, a low basket or shelf with three or four objects, and some space to roll. In a Maltese summer, tiled floors stay lovely and cool, and a cotton blanket makes them comfortable. Our tips for keeping baby cool in summer may help. For a broader approach, see Montessori toys from 0 to 18 months.

Getting outside

Six month olds love the outdoors: the movement of leaves, the sound of the sea, the feel of a breeze. A slow walk along the promenade can be as rich as any toy. Our guide to sensory stroller walks in Malta has ideas for making the most of it.

Safety first

Always supervise mouthing play, check toys regularly for cracks or loose parts, and avoid anything small enough to be a choking hazard. Clean natural toys with a damp cloth rather than soaking.

A half-birthday gift idea

Some families like to mark six months with a small gift. A rattle and a board book, or a starter treasure basket, makes a beautiful and useful present.
